The Problem

Your Time is Valuable

We all have to go grocery shopping, and if you have a family like me, they expect to be fed several times a day. But you're busy, either working away from home and then having to figure out what to make for dinner when you get home, or staying at home to care of kids, taking care of the chores, scheduling playdates, and still having to figure out meals for everyone. You need food that's quick and easy to make, but convenient. Who has the time to run to the grocery store for fresh food items everyday? Do you really want to deprive your family of fresh fruits and veggies. The single biggest complaint that I hear from other moms is that their kids eat nothing but chicken nuggets and hot dogs. But this is your reality if you're relying on convenience food to feed your family.

Your Health is Valuable

The problem with most convenience foods is that they are packed with all sorts of dyes, flavorings, chemicals and preservatives. Do you know what these things are doing to your family's health? If given the option, everyone would like better food options that were healthier, without losing the great taste. But organic foods are expensive aren't they? Who can afford organic whole milk, grass-fed butter, and other organic items? Even organic fruits and veggies are more expensive. No one wants to have to pay through the nose in order to provide better food for their family. But you don't have to because I have the solution!

I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. I have been canning for about 5 years now. When I had difficulties in my first pregnancy because of the processed foods I was eating, and I've always eaten pretty healthy, I was told that I had to cut out all processed foods or my unborn child's life was at risk.

I've been looking a lot more carefully at my diet and the foods we're eating around here since. Cutting out all refined sugar and flour, along with all pre-packaged, processed items was the beginning. Since then I've learned how to make my own breads, chips, tortillas, cereal, granola bars, dried fruit and veggies, and I started canning. I found that I can control the ingredients in our foods by making them myself, and it turns out that we have saved a great deal of money as well.

I have canned a number of fruits, jams, and tomato products. My favorites being mixed berry jam and apple harvest jam. We use a great deal of applesauce, pasta sauce, tomato soup, and tomato paste in our house. I have also canned many kinds of veggies, meats and beans, but that's for another lesson.

I can't wait to have the opportunity to work with you!

  • Is canning going to take a huge financial investment on my part?

Actually the opposite is quite true. Since I started canning we have saved thousands every year from our investment in canning supplies (that are used over and over again), and the fact that we have now become pretty adept at finding the best sales in town on produce. By preserving food when it's at it's cheapest, we keep from having to pay for it at higher costs all year round.

  • Is canning going to be incredibly hard?

It turns out that you don't have to have any talent or skill to be able to can your own food. Yes, there's a learning curve the first few times you try it, which is why you start with one item at a time and perfect your skill before you move on to more complicated things. Practice makes perfect!

  • Is canning going to take up a huge amount of my time?

Canning does take some time, but if you can invest one Saturday every so often, especially during the summer when the best fruits are usually in season, then no. I think investing a little bit of time into your family and their health to get a great deal on food and in the end have a better looking, better tasting product, is totally worth it.

  • How long is this course going to be and how long will it take me to get through?

I am designing the water bath canning course so that you can go through it as slowly or as quickly as you'd like. If you can get through the whole thing in a day and be satisfied that you understand, then awesome. If you'd rather take it slower and repeat some lessons over and over, that works too.

I've been wanting to learn how to can my own foods for a while now. I feel like it will save me money in the long run as well as give my family healthier options. Obesity and diabetes runs in my family and I want my children to learn to love and enjoy healthy foods from a young age. My sister and I decided to learn from YouTube.......that didn't work out so well. But then I made friends with Victoria on Facebook. She invited me over to learn how to water bath can. We did pineapple-yum! I was hesitant to go at first because I have anxiety about meeting new people. I felt welcomed in her home. It was a laid back, kid friendly, welcoming atmosphere. A few other mom's joined us. and we chatted and learned how to water bath can. It was great! Victoria made it easy to understand. She showed us step by step, letting us get hands on or just watch and learn-our choice. By the time I left, I feel confident that I can can pineapple on my own. Which I am actually doing this Sunday! I may have questions on things as I go. Victoria is only a message away though. I also felt like I've gained a new friend, a mom buddy, and a really knowledgable resource! I can't wait to go back next week and do her "advanced course" pressure canning! Meeting Victoria has definitely added value to my life!
